About temple
Situated atop the sacred Harsh Parvat in Sikar, Rajasthan, the Panchmukhi Mahadev Temple is one of the oldest and most revered temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This ancient shrine houses a rare Panchmukhi (five-faced) Shivling, making it a unique spiritual destination. It is considered the oldest Shiva temple in Rajasthan. The name Harsh Parvat is derived from Lord Shiva’s form as Harshnath. According to legends, during the monsoon month of Shravan, Lord Indra and other deities, frightened by the demon Vritrasura, sought refuge on this very mountain. There, they offered prayers to Lord Shiva, who then manifested before them. The gods were filled with immense joy at his appearance, and thus, the mountain came to be known as Harsh Parvat and Lord Shiva as Harshnath.
This temple is believed to be around 1051 years old. It was consecrated by Chauhan King Sinhraj on Ashadha Purnima in Samvat 1030, and its construction took 12 years to complete. The temple features a rare white Shivling, considered one of the most ancient Shiva idols in Rajasthan. According to the Puranas, Lord Shiva took the five-faced form (Panchmukhi) to behold the enchanting youthful form of Lord Vishnu — a form that is honored in this unique temple.
